Kiriel du Papillon started this petition to ACT Place Names Committee

Lachlan Macquarie, governor of NSW from 1810 to 1821, is often remembered by history as a man of the enlightenment who brought civilisation to the colony.

But he was also the instigator of an appalling massacre of Aboriginal people in April 1816, where at least 14 men, women and children were killed - some shot and some driven over a cliff to their deaths on the rocks below.  The Appin massacre was just one of the many instances where the Indigenous people of Australia were mistreated and murdered.

Macquarie not only instigated this massacre, he described it in a report back to England that his men acted "perfectly in Conformity to the instructions I had furnished them".

The suburb of Macquarie in the ACT is named after Lachlan Macquarie.  But I think that this name should be changed, preferably to the name of an Indigenous Elder, as a sign of apology for glorifying this man and this massacre.

Please sign my petition, which will be passed to the ACT Place Names Committee.
