Ask Governor Dayton and DNR Commissioner Landwehr to protect all of our Mississippi River corridor resources!
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is in the process of updating rules that guide future development along the Mississippi River from Dayton and Ramsey downstream through the Twin Cities to Hastings. Established almost 40 years ago as a State Critical Area and in 1988 as a National Park, this 72-mile corridor has some of the most nationally significant resources on the entire length of the Mississippi River. With 25 municipalities along the corridor, the Mississippi River Critical Area needs an overarching set of common sense rules to ensure the unique natural, scenic, historical, cultural and recreational resources are protected and preserved for future generations.
Last year the Minnesota Legislature extended the state’s rulemaking authority so the DNR could complete rules that were drafted in 2010, but never adopted. Unlike the 2010 process that engaged a broad array of stakeholders, the DNR’s current approach to the rulemaking is to dramatically weaken the draft rules, based exclusively on input from local cities. Citizens and environmental groups have been left out of the first phase of this process, and our voices need to be heard before the rules are completely gutted.
A recent DNR report to the Minnesota Legislature indicates the updated rules will focus on protecting water quality, habitat, and existing development, while lessening protections for scenic, cultural, and historic resources despite the DNR’s legal responsibility to protect these resources.
Please write to Governor Dayton and DNR Commissioner Landwehr today! Tell them that protection of ALL the corridor’s resources must be a vital component of the updated rules. DNR should not get to pick and choose which resources to protect and neither should local corridor cities.
