Sawyer Houston started this petition to ACHS Students and Parents

Recently, an email was sent out to students explaining that in order to make the school better, they want to take part of our lunch period and turn it into ACT Prep. (Full letter is attached at the bottom.) Many students are upset about this. ACT Prep isn’t going to give scholarships to students. ACT Prep will also interfere with club meetings, such as SGA, Environmental Club, Spanish Club, FFA, Skills USA, Science Fair Students, BETA Club, and some others. These clubs not only help enrich the lives of students at ACHS, it also helps them connect and thrive with other students with similar interests. If clubs were to hold their meetings after the ACT Prep, students would not have a decent amount of time to eat. And for the record, having ACT Prep Sessions doesn’t make the school... “better.” They make the school look better. Having ACT Prep sessions during lunch won’t fix the other problems in ACHS. It’ll only fix the outward appearance of the school, and the test scores. Lunch isn’t something the school can squeeze and milk to get more academic time and shove students into sessions that further accelerate the deterioration of students mental health. Instead, offer it after school or something else. Please sign this petition to GET RID OF ACT PREP SESSIONS DURING LUNCH!

Letter:

A message from Mr. Little...

Vikings,

Many people at our school have gotten together over the last year to look at areas where we can make our school better. One of those ways is by improving our ACT scores. As you know, the ACT is an important test that can help you get into college. It is also used to evaluate our school. We want you to have every opportunity to go to whatever college you desire if that's what you want to do, even if you're not sure yet if that's what you want to do.

Because of that, we have spent a lot of time and money getting a program together to help raise those scores. Taking the pre-ACT and the ACT practice test a couple of weeks ago were a part of that program. Now, we have to start working on our skills.

This Friday we may have bad weather, and we have a shortened day. For this reason, we are creating an advisory period on Thursday so that we can get started. On Thursday, freshmen, sophomores and juniors will go to Advisory at the beginning of Smart Lunch. We will begin our ACT preparation program at that time. After 20 minutes, freshmen, sophomores and juniors will go to lunch.

Moving forward, we will start doing regularly, up to once a week. We believe that your best effort and our good coaching can help you raise your achievement and open up more choices for your future.

Thanks for your support.
