Acceptance & Affirmation of LGBTQ+ Students By HCPSS
Why this petition matters
We are concerned with the recent criticism against HCPSS and Superintendent Michael Martirano for supporting LGBTQ+ students and ensuring that they will be welcomed and included in our schools. We express our strong support for Superintendent Martirano and HCPSS for fostering an environment inclusive of all students.
We believe that creating a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ students is not “indoctrination” but a necessity. LGBTQ students have experienced countless instances of verbal and physical violence at the hands of their non-supportive peers. Fully supporting these minority students can help mitigate the damaging impact of non-acceptance.
We believe that no member of our community should “opt out” of making our schools welcoming and inclusive for all. That is the responsibility of all students, staff, and community members.
We believe the accusation that the school system is “grooming” 5-year-olds is unfounded and dangerous. It is deceitful and defamatory to imply that supporting marginalized students amounts to child molestation or promotion of pornography.
We believe every member of our community has the right to hold their own beliefs, without being bullied.
We believe that children learn inclusivity from observing their parents/guardians' attitude toward those who are different. Research shows that children notice differences in people from a very early age, and that pointing out and affirming differences is what helps them become inclusive and respectful of others.
During the recent “walkout” in response to anti-trans legislation, many LGBTQ students were harassed and heckled as they walked out. This is but one example of countless ways LGBTQ students suffer for being who they are. For those in the minority, who are regularly harassed, it is crucial that they receive clear and strong support from their families, schools, and the community they live in. Though HCPSS' inclusion and affirmation of LGBTQ lives may make some people uncomfortable or fearful, it is an absolute necessity that will ultimately save lives.
We thank the school system for showing full acceptance and affirmation for those with LGBTQ+ identities. We support the schools, teachers, and students who display their sense of pride and self-worth through rainbow flags in schools and at optional HCPSS Pride events. Thank you for showing acceptance for all.
