Everyone that has any kind of online account, even such as a magazine subscription account or online grocery account, are asked to give their Date of Birth during registration of the account. It is fair and understandable that the Passport Office or Driver License Authority or Medicare need the real Date of Birth. But any other commercial business with an online presence ask for Date of Birth, but some of these businesses fail to protect customers data - this is a fact.
When the businesses have a data breach (hacked), the customers Date of Birth can be used to impersonate the customers to the point of Identity Theft. Even without hacking, a person's Date of Birth can appear and be discovered from many places. Date of Birth is a totally ineffective, insecure and dangerous form of identification.
The solution is to use other means of identification and proof instead of Date of Birth. This can include password, code number send to mobiles, confirmation send to email, second or third passwords, etc.
