Call on the US to Free Oromo Political Prisoners Jawar Mohammed and Bekele Gerba

Since 2020, Jawar Mohammed, Bekele Gerba, and other leaders of the Oromo non-violent, pro-democracy movement have been imprisoned after their participation in protests following the assasination of Hachalu Hundessa. As the conflict in Ethiopia has escalated, the Oromo people has been increasingly concerned about the safety of these prisoners. Their families recently released a statement alleging that security agents tried to gain access to their cells in a likely attempt to assassinate them or move them to an unknown location.  Although this attempt on their life was unsuccessful, the Oromo fear that this will not be the last. Jawar Mohammed, Bekele Gerba, and their fellow prisoners stand as an important voice for peaceful resistance and democracy inside Ethiopia.  The US government must publicly condemn this attempt on their lives and call for the Ethiopian government to ensure their safety, including by immediately releasing them from detention.
