Let us support Abiy Ahmed
Prime Minister of Ethiopia
Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize 2019
in leading Ethiopia to Democracy

We ask the people of Ethiopia to embrace and support Abiy’s approach to Democracy and change. To put their ethnic demands and differences a side, have open and peaceful dialogues with each other and the government and focus on what is best for the people now and future generations. The past has proven that hate and violence is not the answer.

We also ask the older generation to participate in this dialogue. To share their wisdom, their experiences past and present and lead by example.

Democracy is a process and it is not only the responsibility of the leader but the people as well to make it work.

Democracy is about freedom of speech, active participation of the people as citizens in politics and civil life, protection of human rights, the environment and all species.

In a Democracy everyone has the right to free development of their personality, as long as they do not violate the rights of others and do not violate the law.

Only by embracing each other peacefully, acknowledging one another without judgment and prejudice and by having constructive and open dialogues can the people of Ethiopia move forward.

After several years of unrest in Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed was elected and sworn in as Prime Minister on 2 April 2018 by the Ethiopian Parliament.

Upon taking office Abiy and his government presided over the release of thousands of political prisoners some of them facing the death penalty on terrorism charges. He welcomed back Ethiopians living in exile.

Abiy also approached Eritrea to negotiate and end to the Ethio-Eritrean conflict which ultimately won him the
Nobel Peace Prize 2019.

Ethiopians and Eritreans alike welcomed this step which led to the reunification of many families after almost two decades of separation. For the peace process to continue and to be successful it is important that the people on both sides work together responsibly and to not just leave it up to their leaders.

Unfortunately there is still a lot of “Ethnic Federalism” which is responsible for the ongoing unrest in Ethiopia. Sadly with people losing their lives. A lot of them innocent.

As Abiy recently said: “There would be no need for these differences if we solved our quarrels through reconciliation. Our unity and co-existence will benefit our growth, prosperity and greatness!” http://www.bloombergquint.com/onweb/ethiopian-pm-calls-for-unity-as-protest-deaths-rise-to-86
