American Sign Language is increasingly becoming an important skill to have in the workplace and in everyday life. Not only does it widen opportunities for the hearing impaired, but it enables all persons to communicate freely in the world. Allowing students to receive foreign language credits for taking ASL will give it the priority it deserves. As just an elective credit, students must then pick carefully amongst their busy schedules and fit in both a foreign language and ASL on top of required bible credits. EVEN IF these students are pursuing a degree that directly correlates to working with the hearing impaired, such as Speech Pathology, they do not receive foreign language credits for taking ASL. If ASL were offered as a foreign language credit, majors such as elementary education, youth and family ministry, business majors, and more who work with vastly diverse people would not have to choose between fitting in ASL as an elective on top of another foreign language. This skill is vitally important in the world today and it is time that ACU recognizes that and gives ASL the attention and recognition it deserves.
