The Cliffwood Beach area has been an attraction since the early part of the 19th Century. Over the years Aberdeen Township has undergone several attempts to restore it. Most recently, in 2011, Aberdeen Township took initiative in improving the seawall by installing sidewalks, railing and access areas. Upon completion of this restorative effort and attention drawn to the area, residents began to notice crime. This included drug dealing, vandalism, drug use, assault, etc. In response to this, Aberdeen installed cameras to monitor the beach area. Quality of life along the beach and seawall improved for residents and crime slowly diminished. Unfortunately, hurricane Sandy destroyed the beachfront taking away the cameras that were mounted. Since the loss of the cameras, not only has crime increased but the severity of the crimes committed has escalated. The upward spiral of incidents ranging from quality of life crimes like vandalism, to the most recent and alarming incident of murder. This has caused members of the community to fear for their safety and the safety of their families. This is not something that is acceptable to any of us including the residents, taxpayers, and homeowner of Cliffwood Beach.
As a wife, mother and resident of the town I am putting this petition together to request multiple monitoring cameras be installed at our beach front from the parking lot at Whale Creek through the parking lot on Beach Drive. Furthermore, I am requesting that the Aberdeen Police Department commit to daily frequent monitoring of our beach by foot patrol or all terrain vehicle from Whale Creek to Matawan Creek providing a presence and united front against crime. As a community, several members of Cliffwood Beach are committed to building a neighborhood watch in conjunction with the police department. We believe as a community we need to support our police in an effort to reduce and potentially end crime in our community.
