Delay Class Restart at St. Thomas High School

Hurricane Harvey hit the entire Houston area very hard. Now it has been a week since Havey hit the coast of Texas, but despite this, there are countless students, staff, and even some teachers displaced in the wake of the terrible flooding.

Even though the storm has passed, the devastation it caused is very obvious. Driving through areas like Meyerland or Cypress is eye-opening. It is as if these neighborhoods have been completely destroyed. Some families are just getting back to their homes, some have flooded streets that are not allowing them in, and others still are working tirelessly to throw everything they own away while they wait for insurance adjusters and FEMA to make their way to them.

I had the pleasure of volunteering in Meyerland to help move furniture and destroy drywall, and I can tell you from experience that the people there are not in the highest of spirits. Just walking through the neighborhood and seeing the looks on peoples faces as they take pictures of their flooded homes is sickening. The fact also that for most, this is the first time flooding which means many are stuck not knowing what to do. I talked to a man who had lived in his Meyerland home for 50 years not flooding once. I asked him if he needed help and he answered, "with what I do not know where to start". For many, this is the problem meaning they need even more time to fully recover from the flooding.

The St. Thomas Community needs more time to band together and get homes safe enough for our students and staff to come home to AFTER school hours because the problem is not school it is that most literally do not have a home to return to.

As parents and students, we feel that returning to school on September 6th is unreasonable. The schools around us who experienced the same level of devastation are not starting until September 11th. It is almost foolish not to give our families the same courtesy of an additional 5 days, to clean up, organize, and grieve their loses.

If we are truly an eagle family then we will consider all of our staff and students.
