AAEP Foundation: Implement a benevolence fund for Equine Practitioners

The AAEP Foundation has in place funding for disasters for the horses the veterinarians care for, scholarships for student veterinarians and grants for studies and research but nothing is available to help the equine practitioner when they have a crisis.
My husband was a long time member and supporter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. He was injured by a horse he was treating on 12/9/2006 which resulted in a brain injury and cognitive decline. I cared for him through his long illness which was 24/7 the last three years. I watched as the man I loved slowly succomb to this injury as well as the head/neck cancer that developed in 2011 and took him from us on 2/18/2012.
I was not the only one who watched this process, our three children were ages 6, 8, and 16 when this happened. The medical bills and constant care involved absorbed our savings and we ultimately lost our home.
The AAEP Foundation has funding in place for scholarships for student vets, research and disaster relief for horses which is needed but there is nothing available for the veterinarian who has dedicated his life to helping them. There are 16,000 members that could make a tremendous difference in helping their fellow colleague that is in a crisis. An annual tax deductible donation of as little as $20 from each of the members would make a huge difference. I will be the first to donate in the name of my husband, Dr. Ronald L. Dawe.
