A sensible solution to traffic and parking issues in and around Newcastle County Down.

A sensible solution to traffic and parking issues in and around Newcastle County Down.
The Issue
As the summer months arrive, the population of Newcastle will double.
The lane merge, which starts at The Top of The Town and carries on past The Donard Hotel, greatly impedes the flow of traffic through the town, causing a needless tailback from all directions.
This tailback discourages locals and tourists from visiting the Main Street area, and can, at times, stretch beyond the Castlewellan and Dundrum Roads.
We do not wish to inconvenience local traders or residents. While Parking in Newcastle is less than sufficient, there are two large car parks within a few minutes walking distance, the first on the Downs Rd and the second on the Shimna Rd.
We ask that you consider the needs of the entire community, and restore the natural, two lane, traffic system through the whole of Main Street.
We ask that this is completed without delay, well in advance of the busy summer period.
In addition, given Newcastle’s strategic position as a gateway to The Mournes, and as a thoroughfare for commuters travelling from Kilkeel through to Belfast and beyond, we also ask that you address the issue of traffic congestion and parking in Newcastle as a whole, paying particular attention to the following :
· Congestion at the junction of the Shimna, Castlewellan and Dundrum Roads.
· Insufficient parking space convenient to the Main Street retail area.
· Insufficient parking space convenient to Newcastle's beach areas.
· Traffic Wardens inability to address double parking on Main Street.
· Inappropriate use of loading bays as "long term" parking spaces.
Mr Kennedy, as the Minister responsible for strategic planning, transportation strategy, ports and public transport, and the provision and maintenance of roads, we appreciate your attention to the matters listed above, as a matter of urgency.
Sincerely,
The Residents and Traders of Newcastle and Surrounding Areas.
