Why this petition matters

Started by Helena Utopia

A Savannah cat named Berton, a house pet who was taken away from his Limassol home, following an incident, was found dead at a Paphos zoo, in Cyprus, where he was being detained. The cat had lived all his life in the company of humans, and according to the Animal Party Cyprus, Berton was found dead after suffering separation anxiety from his owner. The removal of the cat from his owner was ordered by state authorities following an unexplained apartment breach which resulted in a boy being scratched after the cat emerged from a closed door that became unlatched. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the breach. Τhe, by then,  ailing Savannah cat was smuggled by state officials, from the Limassol zoo to a zoo in Peyia, Paphos, unbeknownst to his owner, instead of getting treatment by a local vet in Limassol and despite his owner living in Limassol where she could visit him every day. Scores of people on social media had been posting comments in support of Berton and his owner, calling on state authorities to allow the animal to go back and live with his human mother. The state ignored their requests. Savannah cats can be legally kept as house pets in EU member states but Cypriot authorities questioned the animal's precise breed characteristics. The owner said that she had all the relevant paperwork for her pet, so if the authorities allowed the animal to enter Cyprus, why are they questioning its breed characteristics now? There is the possibility that Berton was detained unlawfully. This tragic incident which resulted in the suffering and death of a beautiful animal, is the result of the incompetence of state officials, of the Cyprus Veterinary Services and the appalling conditions which exist in Cyprus's zoos. We cannot allow this tragic incident to go unnoticed, and those who caused the animal's death must be held accountable and brought to justice. We want to live in a country where animals are treated with the respect which they deserve. We don't want this tragedy to happen ever again.
