A Plea to Jeremy Corbyn
A Plea to Jeremy Corbyn
Why this petition matters
To Jeremy Corbyn,
We the undersigned believe that the following description is fact. The UK faces an ever increasingly dire future. This will be caused in large part by the governing Tory Party’s decisions creating worse social and economic conditions for people. Or it will be caused by unfortunate responses to external circumstance. There will essentially be no parliamentary political opposition to these decisions or any new initiatives aiming us toward a better future. Just as replacing Johnson as Tory leader will not solve the myriad problems facing the UK, replacing Starmer as LP leader would have a similar lack of effect. The party as it is now politically constituted would only choose someone similarly bad.
Therefore, we the undersigned call upon you Jeremy Corbyn to leave the Labour Party and form a new truly socialist party. We believe a small number of MPs – 10?, 20?, 30? – would follow you out and join the new party. We believe that tens of thousands, perhaps even hundreds of thousands, of committed activists, would quickly join the new party. We believe there is a strong possibility of some union support. We believe that this new party would quickly become the real parliamentary opposition to government actions. Given the inadequacy of the official opposition, they would most certainly be able to “punch above their weight” politically. From there the future would need to be written, justice would still need to be fought for. But at least there would be hope “for the many not the few.”
We the undersigned, believe that the political reality is such that only you could do this Jeremy. This is only partially because of your character and beliefs. There are many others who share the same commitments to a better future. But the political energy which coalesced around you during your time as Labour Party leader, possesses a power which is non-transferable. Only you can do this Jeremy!
We understand that on a personal level, you may not wish this burden. Later on perhaps, either John McDonnell or someone else might take it up. But it has to be you right now. You would still have the full force of the media against you; you would still have lies and false accusations. But they would not come from within the new party. There would be unity. There would be hope. We beseech you to take up this challenge.
