Why this petition matters

Started by Harini Kesamneni

The Krishna river (also known as Krishnaveni) is 1400 km in length and is one of the major sources for irrigation for Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. During its course it supports a large array of biodiversity and is a house for most of the marine ecosystem in these states. The sand deposits have gone down significantly on the banks of River Krishna due to over exploitation and illegal sand mining at several places (Krishna and Guntur districts) . The loss of sand would gradually diminish the invisible fresh water resource in the underground aquifers leading to seepage of sea water into the land. With this, the fertility of the adjoining floodplain lands would be lost.Excessive sand mining can alter the river bed, force the river to change course, erode banks and lead to flooding. It also destroys the habitat of aquatic animals and micro-organisms besides affecting groundwater recharge.Only heavy inflows into the river during the next three years will help in sand accumulation on the river bed and enable it to retain water holding capacity. Sign this petition for a change that can maintain stability where we live and rely on.
