A new world class sports complex for the Geelong region for the 2026 Commonwealth Games

A new world class sports complex for the Geelong region for the 2026 Commonwealth Games
Why this petition matters

Geelong Swimming Club supports a new world class aquatic sports complex being built in the region, to showcase swimming during the 2026 Commonwealth Games and to provide a high quality community resource, as a legacy to support our growing population.
As the marquee sport of Victoria’s 2026 Commonwealth Games, swimming and other aquatic events to be conducted in Geelong will require new world class swimming pool facilities that meet international requirements and will leave community resources and a legacy to support high performance swimming in the region.
Because the region needs additional community swimming resources, Geelong Swimming Club supports the building of a new swimming pool, ahead of a renovation of an existing pool.
For the Commonwealth Games, access to road and rail transport will be important. Because the major current expansion zone in the region is around Armstrong Creek – close to Marshall Station and major road infrastructure – GSC considers, on balance, a new pool complex should be located in that area.
A new pool, for the Commonwealth Games, will reduce the pressure on all swimming pools in the region.
As the largest community swimming club in the region, GSC knows the region’s growing population needs new aquatic sports resources. Existing pools have only limited lane space available and many young people do not have the same swimming opportunities as swimmers in major cities.
We encourage members of the community to support this petition, in the interest of showcasing our region during the Commonwealth Games and providing additional aquatic resources for everyone in the region, long into the future.
