Australia, A more robust and secure Mobile Number Portability process required
0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!
Mobile phones are a household name and most of the things we do - banking, shopping etc., - are tied to the mobile phone we are using.
The present Mobile Number Portability process in Australia lacks the level of security required. It is very easy to port your mobile number with the following details - Your Mobile Number, Date of Birth and Current Service Provider Name. The first two details are easily available personal information. The current service provider details is not difficult to get hold off as well. With these information, it is very easy for a person (other than the account holder) to submit and get a porting request complete. Once this is done all your banking is open to the fraudster by means of using the One Time Password on the ported service.
There is another piece of information required by telecommunication companies - Account Number - but this is optional. Why is this optional? Shouldn't this be made mandatory as this information is difficult to get hold of. What are other measures that the industry could look to introduce - maybe submitting a signed form authorizing the porting or a 100 point ID check?
The need of the hour is to have a more robust process around Mobile Number Portability in order to protect ourselves from Fraud. I have had couple of instances (not personally but with friends) who have been impacted by this and would like to bring about a change so that it doesn't happen to me or anybody else.
