Climate change’s urgency is increasing each day, on April 4th, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a new report among other things in regard to the closing window for action against climate change. It states that greenhouse gases must peak in the year 2025 and to limit the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the world must reach net-zero (where carbon emissions are not bigger than the amount removed) by 2050. We the undersigned call upon martin.st-jean@beaconsfield.ca and georges.bourelle@beaconsfield.ca to support the implementation of a community garden in the city of Beaconsfield. For 5 years, there has been an empty field in the forest of Angell wood since the demolition of the Marian Hall, a former senior residence. This would give residents the possibility to grow their own fruits and vegetables and allow people to drift away from the industrial agricultural sector which is one of the leading causes of carbon emissions while also promoting the consumption of local and healthier foods. A shift to a bigger plant-based diet is one way to reduce deforestation by lowering the demand for animal agriculture thus, sparing the need for more forest clearing. Since forests play an important role in absorbing carbon by photosynthesis, it would help in reducing the total amount of carbon in our atmosphere. Allowing the residents of Beaconsfield to grow their own plants could potentially help change the mentality behind food waste by making them take more care of the amount they grow and keep in their house which is a necessary intervention to reduce their carbon footprint. Transform this empty field into a community garden!
