We ask Forum for Equality and other LGBT organizations in Louisiana to show their full support for everyone in the LGBT community by committing to only support fully transgender- inclusive policies and legislation and to actively oppose any non-inclusive policies and legislation throughout the state of Louisiana.
WHEREAS many national LGBT organizations have long adopted policies for ensuring the inclusion of their transgender or gender non-conforming constituency,
WHEREAS the average length of time between passing anti-discrimination laws in jurisdictions that only include sexual orientation and amending them to later include gender identity/ expression is 14.5 years,
WHEREAS Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays has had a policy since 2002 that acknowledges that it “is exceedingly difficult to broaden the scope of civil rights legislation to expand the protections provided for additional classes of persons, such as transgender, once those laws are in place. This means that any proposed legislation, however progressive and desirable, which does not include all the classes of persons…for whom we advocate will result in the exclusion of those persons from the benefits of such legislation for years to come, if not permanently,”
WHEREAS in New York City, it was 16 years before the LGB community came back for those they deliberately left behind and many other states and cities never came back for their
transgender brothers and sisters,
WHEREAS transgender people are an integral part of Louisiana’s community and are even credited with sparking the Stonewall Riots that marked the beginning of the gay rights movement in 1969,
WHEREAS transgender individuals, particularly transgender people of color, disproportionately face discrimination in housing, employment, the criminal and juvenile justice system, and other social service agencies, especially in Deep South states like Louisiana,
WHEREAS the LGBT community in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and maybe other cities across Louisiana will remember the lives of many transgender people who were murdered last year at the Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, 2010,
We the undersigned ask Forum for Equality to show their full support for everyone in the LGBT community by committing to only support fully transgender- inclusive policies and legislation and to actively oppose any non-inclusive policies and legislation throughout the state of Louisiana.
Because it is worth it to fight for everyone.
Because we don’t believe in leaving anyone behind.
