Andrea Herrera started this petition to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

America has the highest prison rate in the WORLD! Florida is third in the nation with 96,000 prisoners. The Statistics Portal reports that crime rates here in the U.S. over the last twenty years have been on the decline, yet Florida locks people up at a rate 21% higher than the national average. This is a huge factor contributing to overcrowding our prisons.

Are you aware that warehousing is a real thing here in the U.S? I thought that only took place in underdeveloped foreign prisons. Warehousing is another word for inmate hoarding, with inmates literally living on top of one another. This is getting out of hand, to say the least! Our prison system is flawed, especially in Florida where parole was abolished in 1983. Tough-on-crime rhetoric, deterrence, and “keeping the streets safe”, are excellent ploys and adequate excuses just to imprison individuals who are otherwise perfectly capable for rehabilitation. What the system ignores is the abolishment of parole is backfiring! The longer an inmate is in, the more they cost taxpayers instead of being able to re-enter society and contribute in a meaningful way. To house an inmate alone is on average $30,000 a year/ Inmates given life sentences grow old in prison thus costing as much as a million taxpayer dollars in their lifetime.

It has been noted that prison costs have risen to the highest ever. Our justice system costs the US $80 billion annually.  However, it seems Florida voters have taken some initiative in resolving Florida’s broken system. Last year, Florida decided to get rid of the Savings Clause in its Constitution, which prevented outdated sentencing laws that prevented any future criminal justice reforms from being applied retroactively. Although the legislature just introduced a bill for a Saving’s Statute, they now have the power invested in them to introduce bills expressly calling for retroactivity to reforms if the voters show a will for it to happen. One way in which this could occur is by reinstating a parole system.

Cutting sentencing lengths with this form of a release mechanism would reduce the prison population, thus reducing cost. Not only is cost and reduced population critical, but the inmate’s need for a second chance at life, to contribute to society, and being with family is just as monumental. If you feel Florida’s justice system is broken and would like to contribute in taking the next few steps to a more modern productive approach, then check the proposal on the link below and click the FB link to give a like to show your support.
