A black man in Central Oregon was murdered and slandered during small bar fight.
Barry Washington Jr. (22 years old) was at a bar in Bend, Oregon when he complimented and was starting to hit on a woman there. As he was hitting on her, the woman's boyfriend (Mackenzie Cranston) stepped in and started shoving him. Barry Washington Jr. was trying to back off when he was shot by Mackenzie Cranston and then was repeatedly laughed at, ridiculed, and called stereotypical and racist "nicknames" for people of color by almost everyone in the bar as he was bleeding out on the floor. Mackenzie Cranston's girlfriend was accusing Barry Washington Jr. of sexually assaulting her and forcing himself on to her which by video evidence was found not true.
The evidence was presented on the news and in court, filmed by Mackenzie Cranston's girlfriend (Allison Butler). Despite the evidence being presented, Mackenzie Cranston was still released from prison by the state on bail at one point.
“He was a nerd, there’s no other way to put it. He liked to play Pokémon. He played Nintendo every day,” said Max Petersen, Washington’s longtime friend and a roommate in Bend. Washington moved to the area over the summer, and Petersen said he encouraged his friend to come from the Bay Area. “I told him it would be a safe environment up here. But, that was obviously a lie.”
Help Barry Washington Jr. and other people from the harm of white privilege.
