BLA SALC started this petition to 7th and 8th grade BLA Students

On Monday, September 10, 2018. A new assigned seating policy was implemented for the 7th and 8th grade lunch at Boston Latin Academy. This policy segregates where students can sit in the cafeteria  based on their homeroom. We, the BLA Student Action Leadership Council (SALC), believe that this is unfair because students should have the freedom to pick who they want to sit with, and where they want to sit. Many students have friends who they can only socialize with at lunch, but because of the new policy, they now cannot see them at all during the school day. We also disagree the new policy of silence during the last 5 minutes of lunch, in order to cleanup lunch garbage. We believe that this is not good because it takes time away from students being able to eat. If lunch is only 20 minutes long and one has to stand in line for 5 minutes to get lunch, and they also must devote the last 5 minutes to cleaning up, that means that they only have 10 minutes to eat. 10 minutes is not enough time to enjoy and eat a healthy lunch. The SALC doesn’t oppose attempts at making a cleaner and nicer cafeteria and lunch environment, we just oppose segregation by homeroom, and we would be willing to work with BLA administrators to find alternative solutions for seventh and eighth graders in the Boston Latin Academy community
