I have been called R word as someone with a developmental disability and each time it hurts and often justifies violence done to me. Please don't do it

I'm autistic and have been the butt of the R-word more than once. It's a hurtful, ableist slur.

It is not okay to take a term which clearly designates a medical condition and use it to insult oneself or others. This is belittling to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and further reinforces abelist stereotypes.

Erase the R word from your vocabulary- don’t use it. Disability is not an insult- disability isn’t a character trait. Disabilities are conditions we are born with or develop in life- but our lives are not tragic insults, so quit using it like one.

It’s long past time that society learn the concept of “ableism,” and why it’s a problem not just for disabled people, but for everyone. Twenty percent of Americans have a disability. How we talk about that matters.
