We condemn the punishment given by University of Stirling to students involved in the UCU Strike Occupation last year (Nov/Dec) as they face an 8-week suspension (or worse) for trying to help improve our lecturers’ working conditions. This suspension prevents students from not only attending classes but suspends them from their accommodation, from submitting university coursework externally, i.e. through Canvas. Not only making students homeless but also suggesting that all the students grades will be capped or will possibly fail without guarantee of being able to resit next year. They will also be prevented from participating in clubs and societies which is the support network for many students here in Stirling. Additionally, they will be unable to access basic requirements such as the pharmacy, Airthrey Park Medical Centre or see their counsellors and mental health advisors without being escorted by security which is deeply embarrassing and a waste of security’s time. This decision taken by the university will have a great financial and mental impact on these students. We ask the public, students, UCU members and other university unions to join us and support these students and challenge the University’s decision.
