5 Mental health days built into public school calendar
Why this petition matters
I am a mother, Elementary school Principal and Mental Health advocate and Executive Director of Mental Health Support Network (MHSN). Youth Mental Health has continued to deteriorate and degrade in the state of Georgia that ranks 48/50 states for access to Mental Health care. The state has a lack of Mental Health professionals/clinicians to provide the mental healthcare that all Georgians need. Students in public schools are working to catch up in an academic environment that says that students are falling academically behind after the COVID-19 pandemic. And even thought funding and plans are moving forward to help progress students academically forward, very little is in place to provide a pressure release valve for the stress and trauma already experienced. Providing students with 5 mental health days per year will give students opportunities to visit mental health professionals/clinicians and use the Socio-emotional tools they learn in school to bring about mental well-being and regeneration. Currently, 12 states nationwide ( California, Illinois, Washington, Virginia, Maine, Connecticut, Oregon Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Kentucky, and Colorado) all provide mental health days to their public school students. And coincidentally, all of these states have better mental healthcare policies and access to care than Georgia. In order to get better, we’ve got to be willing to do something different. And why not do what’s best for our children.
