If you're a gamer, you've likely heard about the release of the Master Chief Collection on Steam and the Microsoft store. This release means that several of the most famous Halo games are going to finally make their way to the PC. With the exception of Halo: Combat Evolved, and Halo 2, 4 of these games are being added for the first time. However, not all were released at once, and Halo: Reach was chosen to be the flagship of the collection, being the only one currently available while the others will be added in the coming months.

If you remember playing Halo: Reach on the Xbox 360, you no doubt remember the Credit system that Reach had in place. Playing through the Campaign, Firefight, Multiplayer, and even Custom Games granted you Credits that could be used for customizing your Spartans. It was far from a perfect system. Many of the "late tier" items were incredibly expensive to purchase (the most expensive cost 2 million credits). On top of that, credit gain was considered fairly weak. An average match may have only netted you 600ish credits, with a good match netting around a 1000. A decent game of firefight would cash in around 4000 credits. This meant to unlock many items required a lot of grinding, but even that had issues surrounding it. Bungie (the original developers of Reach), put a cap in the game at 200,000 credits a day. For a lot of people, this was almost never reached, but for players attempting to acquire high-end cosmetic items, this was a huge slap in the face! It almost felt that it was meant to disincentivize players from doing exactly that.

Suffice to say, the system was not perfect, some may not even have considered it great. But for 343 to trash the system entirely in favor of their new "Seasons"? Completely uncalled for. The current system is worse than credits ever were. The old system was fixable. By removing the earning cap, decreasing the price of some gear, and increasing the credits earned, the system could have been turned from a "monotonous" grind, into a progression system worthy of such an amazing game. But maybe they didn't want to do that. Maybe they envisioned this new system would actually be better. Why makes it so bad, you might ask me? What makes it so bad is the simple fact that it has taken arguably the worst parts of the old system, and made it something entirely else.

This is how the new system works. You play, you gain XP from matches, and when you get enough XP, you level up. Leveling up earns you 1 season point, which is then spent to unlock the first "tier" of the season. Unlocking the first tier grants you the item(s) inside it, and allows you to unlock the second tier. Go play some more, level up again, earn another point, and unlock the second tier. Rinse and repeat until level 100, the final level. You cannot skip tiers, you can only unlock in order. What's the issue with that? For starters, XP can only be gained in two ways. 1st, is by playing competitive matchmaking (slayer, swat, invasion, etc). The 2nd is by playing online firefight. And that's it, you cannot level up any other way. In the original, credits could be earned by playing everything but theater mode. Yes, even custom games earned you credits. Secondly, caps are still present in the game. There is a cap for how much XP can be earned while playing. How is that any different from the old system? You're still punishing players for playing as well as they can. Finally, the grind has been increased substantially for many of the items. It seems that the items for each tier are chosen arbitrarily, the first 10 tiers only unlock helmets (with the exception of tiers 7 and 8, which unlock a firefight voice and elite respectively). If you wanted to make a full set of armor (change every item slot excluding armor effect and firefight voice), it would take you until level 36 to do so. If you wanted a specific armor piece? Better hope you unlock it at a low level, otherwise have fun grinding through items you don't want to get it. Back in the original game, I loved the ODST helmet. To unlock it cost only 2,000 credits. That was at most 4 games, two if I played really well, and maybe only a single player mission or two. To unlock it now? Level 19. I need to level up 19 times, and unlock 18 different items, half of which are helmets I don't want just to unlock the one I do. That's absolutely absurd! And god forbid if you enjoyed anything else that used to be relatively less expensive in the original game, but is now for some reason at the end of the tier list. Have fun grinding to level 88 for the cool item.

Look, I'm not saying the old way was perfect. As already stated, it absolutely was not. But it had a good foundation, and the rest was fixable. This system doesn't seem to be. And I understand the reasons behind making it this way, even if I can't ever agree with them. But there was a better way to do this. The Elites are still stuck with preset armor loadouts you unlock by leveling up. Elites are not able to be customized the way the Spartans are. Why not just make Elites customizable, and use the seasons to unlock their gear that way? Surely, that would be the best way would it not? Have both systems in place? At the very least, even if that is not possible, bring back the old system, and fix it. Answer the cries of the community, and give us back Reach we remembered.
