2021/22 Safety Net For The Electronic And Electrical Engineering Cohort (Brunel)
Why this petition matters

The University Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has decided for all level 5 exams taking place in May 2022 to occur in person. Considering the unexpected circumstances brought about by COVID 19 last year and the beginning of this year, a lot of students were under the impression that their tests would either be in person or online. When lecturers were pressed on this issue, uncertainty arose and students were told to "keep an eye out for updates". Eventually, we were told the exams would be in person with no safety net for students. Students from this department have had both a safety net and open book examinations in the past two years.
This year is incredibly important for progression into the final year of our degree; two credits at an E grade can hinder our progress and as a result, hinder our career choices. Therefore, the department should introduce a safety net to alleviate the pressure from adapting to in-person exams for the first time in 3 years.
So far, departments in the College of Engineering, Design, and Physical Sciences have taken different approaches to the ongoing examinations. In particular, the Civil Engineering department has been taking their exams remotely (open book). Similarly, the majority of Electronic and Electrical Engineering departments across the country have kept their exams remote instead of in person.
We are asking the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering to introduce a mitigation/safety net system to bring fairer results for Electronic and Electrical Engineering students. Being expected to perform to similar levels to those of previous years (open book and remote with a safety net) is extremely unfair. Especially under the circumstances of having to adapt to in-person exams. A mitigation/safety net would relieve a lot of pressure and stress from the current in-person exams and allow students a second chance to achieve a grade that reflects their work.
