Why this petition matters

In Grade 1, children are expected to do 10 minutes of homework daily; in Grade 2, 20 minutes; and so on through Grade 12, where on average, they are expected to do 120 minutes of homework every day, or roughly 10 hours per week. The maximum is 10 minutes for 1st grade, 20 minutes for 2nd grade, up to 120 minutes max for 12th grade. Total daily homework assignments for K-3 should be under 15 minutes, 30 minutes for grades 4-6.    Show Source Texts

Having regular set times for home school-age children in the daytime schedule will allow them the time they need to complete assignments most days. Teaching staff will have opportunities to meet together in teams to plan assignments to ensure students are regularly taking no more than 30 minutes of required homework each evening for grades 3; 40 minutes for grades 4; and 50 minutes for grades 5. Homework will be scheduled so students can see the connection between their assignments and intended learning goals, can see meaning in their assignments, clearly understand procedures and due dates, understand how their assignments are evaluated, and can understand how they can use the feedback from assignments to enhance understanding.    Show Source Texts

Teachers will be aware of students circumstances and will adjust the assignments for homework to have flexible due dates whenever possible, so students are able to work through the assignments during the week according to their personal schedules. Teachers should give students prompt feedback about all assignments. Students, parents, and teachers must communicate the expected and actual time to complete assignments in order to provide realistic expectations of how assignments will be completed. Districts and schools should make sure teachers adhere to the research-supported 10-minute rule. In addition, teachers, schools, and districts should consider resources that will prepare all students to succeed when faced with a tougher homework assignment; homework should never become a burden or source of stress to families and parents.
