73 percent of children under the age of 18 fall victim to Cyber Bullying. Suicide in teens has increased by 56 percent in the past 10 years. Depression, isolation, and low self-esteem is at an all time high. Psychologists have long observed bad effects of social media on the mental health of children. Findings suggests that children spending more than three hours a day on social media are twice as likely to suffer from poor mental health. Their immersion in a virtual world delays their emotional and social development.
By raising the minimum age to 18, we would be protecting our children and youth from the negative effects of social media, while encouraging normal, healthy social interaction, and development.
We have a law that one must be 17 to watch R rated films, 18 to buy cigarettes or view pornography, 21 years old to drink, but yet nothing protects our children against the dangers and great responsibility of owning a social media account. Not only by setting an age minimum of 18 could we drastically decrease Cyber Bullying, suicides, and mental health issues, but we would also be protecting our children from online sexual predators and potential trafficking, which has become far too common in modern day society.
Under this bill, children with current social accounts would be frozen until their 18th birthday, business accounts would be able to remain active under supervision and authorization of an adult, any personal accounts under 18 would be prohibited. Those caught going against the proposed law, could face ticketed fines, and/or community service as consequences. Please sign the petition to help us reach our goal of getting an age requirements to own social media accounts. Together we can make a change to protect our children, and their futures.
