Imposing drug testing on schoolchildren when Philippine police are summarily killing alleged drug users endangers children should they fail such a drug test. Mandatory testing may also violate children’s right to bodily integrity, constitute arbitrary interference with their privacy and dignity, and may deter children from attending school for reasons unrelated to any potential drug use.

this issues have to do with difficulty in inferring relationships. if your child is outside and you ask them “why are all the streets and sidewalks wet?” and they cannot figure it out. Difficulty recognizing cause-effect relationship can become a serious problem since many dangerous behaviours are prevented by a proper understanding of cause-effect relationships. For example, putting your hand on a hot stove (the cause) will produce a burn (the effect). Children with cause-effect relationship problems will have much more trouble learning that it is not a good idea to put your hand on the stove. It should be remembered that all children, at some point, will behave impulsively. In many cases, the child understands the cause-effect relationship but has not yet learned to control their impulses.

We cannot bring about all the changes we want to improve children’s lives alone. Children’s rights are often violated through a combination of complex processes, from the levels of family and community to those of national, regional and international. We need to be able to influence and lobby duty- bearers so that they meet their obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Based on evidence from our experience and our commitment to giving children a voice, we can play a key role in supporting children, their families and communities to claim their rights. By doing effective advocacy, we can bring about key changes in policy, legislation and practice that will have a lasting impact on children’s lives.
