Alexis Winkfield started this petition to Governor Andy Beshear and

How many people do you know who are constantly being put in jail, and being mistreated for showing clear signs of mental illness? How many people do you know who die from not receiving the help they deserve? Mental health in society is still stigmatized, even with the recent information that people have found proving how important it is. We desperately need your help to put a stop to the mistreatment of people who are struggling with mental illness. To make this drastic change, we must all come together and use our voices to speak up for people who are unable to call out for help.

According to the Kentucky Department for Behavioral Health (n.d.), of the 15,500 prisoners in JUST Kentucky alone, 16% suffer from a severe and persistent mental illness, while 59% of those imprisoned suffer from a substance abuse disorder (p. 2). The Kentucky Department for Behavioral Health (n.d.), also mentions that the number of people suffering from severe mental illness in county jails is UNKNOWN (p. 2), so just imagine how many more are suffering!

This situation hits close to home and that is what motivates us to do everything in our power to make a true change. Our family has struggled with getting genuine help for my sister going on 5 years now. 5 YEARS, my sister who had never been in any legal trouble beforehand has roamed the streets while mentally unstable, collecting charge by charge that clearly all point to mental illness! Someone who had never been in trouble, and shows warning signs of severe mental illness should’ve stuck out notably! Her state of mind is a danger to herself and others, and nothing has changed after several attempts to get her help.

We want legislation to see that this is an injustice, and we propose that after habitual times in court for mental illness the issue should be addressed as such within the first 6 months, and not take more than 12 months. We know we are now facing a crisis, but mental health is one crisis that has been right in front of our eyes for way too long. Please, help get on the road to change by signing this petition!
