Mar 28, 2017 — Dear EUSP friends, we've translated the petition into English. Please share it among your English speaking colleagues.

On the 7th of December 2016 Rosobrnadzor, Russian education watchdog, suspended the license of European University at St. Petersburg, a private post-graduate school for the social sciences and humanities. On the 20th of March 2017 the license was revoked by a court decision which is to come into effect right after the university’s appeal is considered. One of the leading universities of Russia and Eastern Europe is being forced to stop its educational activities.
European University at St. Petersburg is one of the leading education and research institutions in humanities and social sciences. The university offers Master’s and postgraduate programs for Russian students and international programs for students coming from all parts of the world. The university alumni are among the most sought professionals in Russia and in international academia, education and analytics labor markets. Founded in 1994, the university has quickly gained global recognition. The scholars working at Gagarinskaya st. 3, St.Petersburg, Russia are well known to their fellow academics from all over the world: from Shanghai to New York and from London to Canberra.

Among the list of university founders:
o George Abdushelishvili – one of the founders of Ward Howell International offices in Russia, listed in The Global 200 Executive Recruiters Rating as one of the best executive search professionals in the world;
o Nikolai Vakhtin – one of the most famous Russian linguists, Doctor of Science in Philology, Professor of Arctic Social Studies, Correspondent Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who has worked as a visiting professor at Georgetown University, University of Copenhagen, Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge University, New College, Oxford UK.;
o Oleg Zherebtsov – a Russian businessman, founder of "Lenta" and "Norma" hypermarkets, world sailing champion in 2011, founder of SB20 Association in Russia, and General Director of the Pharmaceutical Company Solopharm., Dr. h.c. at Babson College, USA, for his business activities;
o Alexey Kudrin – one of the leading Russian economists, Minister of Finance of the Russian Federation (2000-2011) and the best Finance Minister of the year in 2010 according to “Euromoney”, former deputy head of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation, chief of the main Control Department of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation, head of the Center for Strategic Research;
o Mikhail Piotrovsky – Director of the State Hermitage Museum, dean of the Oriental Studies faculty in St. Petersburg State University, Correspondent Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, chairman of the Council of Russian Museums, a globally renowned specialist in Oriental history;
o Boris Firsov – a world-famous sociologist, Honorary Rector of Helsinki University, recipient of the International Leontief Award (2006), a former student of prof. V. Yadov, author of more than 200 publications that came out in USA, Germany, France, Poland, Finland etc.;
o Anna Temkina – one of the leading Russian academics in gender research, feminism studies, sociology of health and medicine, a researcher and a visiting lecturer at European Humanities University, University of Tampere, Helsinki University, University of Joensuu;
o Elena Chernyshkova – president and board chairperson at Sistema Charitable Foundation (science and education, culture and arts, public health and social support, national heritage, physical culture and sport).

All these people have become prominent professionals in the fields of science, culture, business and civil services. They have gained an international recognition of their work. They founded the European University in order to create an institution where talented young academics could advance their knowledge and skills for further work in global academia.

At present moment, several powerful think-tanks are based at the EUSP:
o Institute for the Rule of Law
o Center for Modernization Studies
o Center for Energy and Environmental Economics Studies
o Center for Science and Technology Studies
o Center for Applied Research
o Center for Governance and Public Policy
o «Res Publica» Center
o «Petersburg Judaica» Center
o Center for Anthropology of Religion

The work of these research centers is of a high demand in the world, which is proved by numerous commissions for research from governmental bodies, corporations and non-profit organizations.
European University at St. is a leading postgraduate education and research center in Russia according to the rating of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. However, it was inspected by 11 different governmental watchdogs in summer 2016. On the 20th of March 2017, the license was revoked by a court decision, mainly because of the university’s failure to adhere to formal requirements, specifying the percentage of courses, taught by practitioner teachers in the field of political science (while there is no legal definition of a practitioner teacher and, subsequently no fail-safe way to prove that the members of faculty qualify as such), and no fitness room on the premises.

We, the signers of this petition, support the European University at Saint Petersburg and ask the government of the Russian Federation not to suspend EUSP educational activities. We stand with EUSP #saveEUSP !
