Break Away The Alternative Break Connection

Break Away is developing long term solutions to social issues by changing the way people think about them. Break Away developed an alternative break model incorporating learning elements and reflection/reorientation components that lift service experiences from isolated volunteer vacations to springboards for lifelong active citizenship. Break Away was founded in June 1991 by two Vanderbilt University students, Michael Magevney and Laura Mann, and operated as a program of Vanderbilt until it incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in May of 2000. Break Away's services include leadership training, such as week-long Alternative Break Citizenship Schools and weekend Site Leader Retreats; membership opportunities; a directory of more than 450 community organizations willing to host alternative break volunteers; and publications that walk alternative break leaders through all phases of program development.
