Justine Greening: Be a global champion for women’s rights and gender equality!

Despite hard won gains, women currently account for about two-thirds of the 1.4 billion people who live in extreme poverty. 1 in 3 women experience violence in their lifetime, and women are routinely kept out of decision-making. Gender inequality and denial of women’s rights remain a significant global challenge. Between 10-21 March 2014, over 3000 delegates from all over the world, including Justine Greening MP, the Secretary of State for International Development, will attend the fifty-eighth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW58) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Delegates will be discussing the challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for women and girls. The goals were part of a historic commitment to end extreme poverty and have shaped development policy, projects and funding for the past 15 years. Delegates at CSW58 will also be discussing the Post-2015 development framework which replaces the MDGs.  Justine Greening has tweeted her support for a standalone goal on women’s rights and gender equality to be included in the Post-2015 development framework. This is a great first step, but we need her to stop at nothing until world leaders agree to put women’s rights front and centre of the new framework. We believe that anything else would be a massive roll back on women’s rights. Please sign the petition and join our call for Justine Greening to be a global champion for women’s rights and gender equality particularly at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW58) in March 2014. Please also go to www.womankind.org.uk for more information about Womankind’s position on the Post 2015 Development Framework.
