Reconsider school attendance boundaries so our children can attend the nearest schools

There are numerous families in the Villa Valencia and Valencia Park subdivisions of Sunland Park, New Mexico, who purchased homes in the community because of the immediate proximity to Santa Teresa Elementary School (STES), only to find out after the fact that they'd have to bus or drive their children to La Union Elementary School, which is over 6 miles away from the neighborhood. Parents have voiced their concerns to Sunland Park City Council and to the Board of Directors of the Villa Valencia Homeowners Association on several occasions. The most common concern that has been voiced is that as property tax payers, families residing in Villa Valencia and surrounding subdivisions should be granted the privilege to have their children attend STES. Villa Valencia Homeowners Association President Raul Telles has proposed re-defining school attendance zones to Sunland Park City Council so that our children can attend the school closes to them, versus having to bus or drive our kids to La Union and even Anthony for Pre-K!. Mayor Javier Perea and Mr. Telles will be meeting with Gadsden Independent School District (GISD) officials to iron out a possible solution. This is where we as a community must unite and use our voices. If you have school-aged children, you know exactly what it's like having to bus or drive your child over 6+ miles away from home when there's a school that's within walking distance. Even those of you who don't have young children can relate through casual conversation with fellow neighbors who are parents to youngsters. Let's show Mayor Perea and GISD Interim Superintendent Susie Yturralde that we desire a solution to this issue for our children and generations to come.
