Increase funding specifically for pediatric cancer research!
As a society, we have a moral obligation to care for and protect the vulnerable and dependent. No segment of our population is more important or more valuable than our children. Cancer is a formidable enemy, ravaging thousands of children each and every day and harshly impacting communities around the world. Children need and deserve the war on cancer to apply to those cancers that affect them and their families. The National Cancer Institute must be obligated to wage war on childhood cancers, investing significantly more resources in saving our children and preserving their futures. The time is now, we can not wait any longer! Our 2 year old daughter Nova Jimmie Jeanne Martensen lost her life to a rare and aggressive form of pediatric cancer. I truly believe that due to the lack of funding our daughter stood little to no chance at survival. During her year long battle we encountered hundreds upon hundreds of children and families suffering from the ravages of this horrible disease all holding little to no hope. Statistics show that on average a child looses around 71 life years compared to adults who only lose on average 17 life years yet we place more value on adult cancer research. Childhood cancer is not one disease, there are 16 major types of pediatric cancers and over 100 subtypes. Since 1980, fewer than 10 drugs have been developed for use in children with cancer including those specifically for children and those for both children and adult compared with hundreds of drugs that have been developed specifically for adults. Cancer is the number one cause of death by disease among children, how can we justify not showing this horrible epidemic the attention it greatly needs? Our children are worth more than the scraps that they are being thrown, 4% is not enough, our daughter was worth more!
