Protest Newsweek Giving One-Sided Coverage to Sex Offender Protesting Conviction
On October 29, 2015 Owen Labrie was sentenced for sex offenses occurring at St. Paul's prep school against a 15-year-old girl. Superior Court Judge Lawrence Smukler told Labrie from the bench: "You are a very good liar" before imposing three concurrent 12-month terms for misdemeanor counts of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, as well as a felony charge of computer-related seduction. On December 18, 2015 Newsweek gave Labrie a photo spread and published a one-sided review of the case that did not include any comments from law enforcement, the prosecution, the judge, the victim or her family, or their attorneys. Such one-sided coverage paints a false picture of innocence for an offender being found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a fair trial. The coverage also skimmed over damning evidence including Labrie's intentional deletion of admissions to the sex offenses from his Facebook account including Labrie's acknowledgement that the victim was "prepubescent." Newsweek essentially is serving as part of Labrie's defense team as he appeals to the Supreme Court of New Hampshire. This has caused the victim and her family ongoing harm. Tells
Have Survivor Voices at the Table for Campus SaVE Act Rulemaking and Negotiations
There is growing recognition that campus sexual violence is a prevalent problem in the U.S. The 2013 Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization has implemented new law to address sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. This law is known as the Campus SaVE Act (http://clerycenter.org/campus-sexual-violence-elimination-save-act). In 2014, rulemaking will begin for the Campus SaVE Act and we need survivor voices on the table (http://www.wtop.com/109/3467678/DC-summit-encourages-colleges-to-address-sexual-assault). This petition is in support of Laura Dunn's nomination to the rulemaking committee. Dunn is a nationally known survivor of campus sexual assault, a leader within the student activism community, and an up-and-coming legal expert in the field of campus safety (http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/bestoftv/2011/04/08/exp.jvm.rape.victims.courage.hln.html). Sign this petition now to ensure a survivor voice is at the table and that sexual violence and other forms of gender violence are meaningfully addressed on campus. Thank you in advance for your support.
