Stop the Town of Milton Land Grab
Using Site Plan Control for road-widenings in the Town of Milton must stop! In December 2017 my family had finally saved enough to attempt a modest addition on our home in the Milton heritage character area. With the expansion of our family we wanted to reconfigure the garage and add a new Master Bedroom with on-suite bathroom above. Never in our wildest dreams did we believe that the Town of Milton would hold our hopes and dreams hostage on the condition that we give them a significant portion of our already small (55'x66') lot. Add the taking of a "daylight triangle" and part of our brick and mortar front-porch would be on Town land! We were shocked to learn that the Town was forcing homeowners to do this all across parts of Milton - that some had given in and allowed the Town to take their land at great expense, while others had just given up and have stopped in their plans to improve their properties altogether! We've been told of at least one home sale that fell through because the buyer found out about these requirements and rescinded their offer. I'm sure there have been others. And for what? So that in 50-100 years, when the Town has acquired all the road-widenings along a street they will finally be able to make a street that has been functioning beautifully for 100 years before, meet suburban engineering traffic standards that were considered out of date ten years ago. It is highly unusual for a Municipality to place Low Density Residential Development under Site Plan Control. The Town of Milton is using the Planning Act to unjustly force property owners to cede land to the Town at the owner's expense. This policy is unfairly costing homeowners, and is preventing improvements and investment in our Town. Forcing Milton property owners to dedicate our land for wider roadways is not wanted, and doesn’t reflect the values of our community in a free and fair society. Send a strong message to the Town of Milton, sign this petition and tell them that this tyrannical policy must stop!
