Stop Rep. Steve Zimmer and the LAUSD from building an unnecessary 30 million dollar language immersion school right next to our under-funded and under-enrolled neighborhood schools.
We are the members of the West Mar Vista Residents Association, a non-profit organization. We are community members trying to stop Representative Steve Zimmer and the board of the LAUSD from building an unnecessary 30 million dollar school that will house one language-immersion program right next to our under-funded and under-enrolled neighborhood schools. The proposed school would take over 4 acres of irreplaceable green space that families in the community currently use for sports activities. It would leave the middle school sharing the campus, Mark Twain, with only 1.8 acres of recreational space, well below the LAUSD standard of 6 acres. On school days an estimated 850 new commuter trips will be added to gridlocked streets that already have the lowest possible "F" rating. This "Traffic Armageddon" will be unavoidable, toxic and potentially lethal. Every day dozens of children will be crossing these dangerous streets to enter and exit the three schools in the immediate area. This expenditure on new construction is especially egregious when you consider that public schools in the area are collectively experiencing 38% vacancy. The LAUSD has already proposed an alternative to the new construction that involves moving a smaller language program (67 students) to an under-enrolled Elementary School less than a mile away. This move would create a solution that only uses existing school structures, saving the $30 million in bond money for the neighborhood schools that really need it. Our goal is to create a public awareness campaign so loud and powerful the LAUSD will have no choice but to go with this preferred alternative. Currently we are raising funds to support our public response to the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) pertaining to this project. We feel the EIR is flawed, inaccurate and does not protect the interests of the community. Our response to the EIR would include our own independent traffic study, the before mentioned awareness campaign and, if it comes to it, hiring a CEQA lawyer to fight the EIR in court. The public response period to the EIR expires May 11th, 2015. If our actions don’t change the current course of events, the LAUSD school board will pass the EIR and give the green light to break ground. We must act quickly and loudly if we are to save our neighborhood. Please join our effort in anyway you can by visting our website can clicking "What Can I do Today?"
