Investigate the Illegal Killing of Thor, an Adoptable Dog at the Long Beach Animal Shelter
Thor was a healthy and adoptable dog who was illegally killed on July 14, 2016 by Long Beach Animal Care Services. Shelter staff regarded him as a favorite. He was described as "super sweet" by the person who was going to adopt him, a rescue wanted him, he'd been to adoption events, was good with kids, and was basically an all-around good dog during the 6 weeks he had been at the shelter. On the morning of July 14, Thor had an adopter who was ready to take him home. Three hours later, he was dead. After turning away the adopter, the shelter designated him as available to "Rescue Only." The Rescue contacted the shelter before his killing to ask for his release, but the shelter euthanized him instead. This is a violation of California's Hayden Act, the law that regulates shelters in California. We have asked the Long Beach City Attorney to investigate Thor's death and to ensure that proper protocols are put in place in the shelter so that no adoptable or treatable dog is killed in violation of California law again at the Long Beach Animal Care Services shelter. Please sign our petition asking for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Thor's tragic death and important changes in the way the Long Beach animal shelter operates.
