    QSR Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Ayamas): End The Use Of Battery Cages Now!

    QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd is the franchise owner of Yum! Brands in Malaysia and operates over 830 KFC restaurants and over 475 Pizza Hut restaurants in Malaysia. It is also the owner of Kedai Ayamas and Ayamas Integrated Poultry Sdn. Bhd., which supplies poultry and eggs to its restaurant outlets. QSR Brands, along with Yum! Brands, the parent company of KFC and Pizza Hut, are responsible for the cruel and archaic confinement of millions of egg-laying hens in tiny, filthy cages.  These cages are so small and packed with birds that the hens can’t move or spread their wings. Often, their body parts are caught in the caging, resulting in fractured or broken bones, deformities, and severe feather loss. Some hens, exhausted or unable to move, are trampled to death by their cage mates. Those that don’t die from the abuse spend their miserable lives trapped with dead birds at their feet.  Eggs from caged hens are associated with a higher risk of salmonella contamination (Reference: https://www.humanesociety.org/sites/default/files/docs/report-food-safety-eggs.pdf as well as poorer welfare and a higher risk of injuries to hens due to their cruel and crowded living conditions. A 2010 study published in Veterinary Record reports that a large-scale UK survey found that battery-cage poultry farms are 6 times more likely than cage-free farms to be infected with the strain of salmonella most commonly associated with food poisoning. Scientists have also warned that existing farm conditions for poultry and livestock will make it the source of future pandemics (https://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/news/next-pandemic-could-easily-come-our-factory-farms In Malaysia, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Ayamas receive their supply of poultry products from Ayamas Integrated Poultry Sdn Bhd, and their sauces and dressings from Region Food Industries Sdn Bhd, both of which are business arms of QSR Brands. This means that QSR Brands has control over its suppliers and can set its own deadlines and implement policies to switch to cage-free egg production and better broiler welfare. There is simply no excuse for QSR Brands not to transition to producing and sourcing only cage-free eggs for its businesses in Malaysia. Thousands of companies around the world are already ditching cages. Global commitments to go cage-free are being made by some of the largest companies in the world, including Burger King, Tim Hortons, Popeyes, Unilever, Nestle, Aldi, InterContinental Hotels, Sodexo, Marriott, Wyndham, Compass Group, Shake Shack, Famous Brands, Costa Coffee, and Barilla. Even low-end fast food and pet food companies are moving away from this horrible practice.  Yum! Brands says it is dedicated to “building global, iconic brands people trust and champion". QSR Brands claims it is “committed to corporate responsibility, and will continue to improve the wellbeing of those around us”, yet clearly it is not committed to best practices in relation to the farm animals that it uses and profits from. Customers around the world are losing trust while KFC and Pizza Hut profit from the unfathomable abuse of millions of animals. To be clear, we would like to see QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd: (1) Publish a commitment and timeline to go 100% cage-free for all shell, liquid and ingredient eggs by 2025 or sooner for all its outlets; and(2) Commit to public annual progress reporting to ensure transparency. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, or omnivorous – we can all agree on the same thing: Farm animals deserve better, and if you eat them, use them, and profit from them, you owe them a better life!     Din Tai Fung: Stop Animal Cruelty

    Din Tai Fung: Stop Animal Cruelty Din Tai Fung likes to say that it cares about quality. But when it comes to animal welfare, this iconic Taiwanese restaurant chain is failing its customers and failing its reputation. An untold number of egg-laying hens suffer in cruel cages throughout Din Tai Fung’s global supply chain. These cages are so small and packed with birds that the hens can’t do anything that is natural or important to them. Often, their body parts are caught in the caging, which results in fractured or broken bones, deformities, and severe feather loss. Some hens, exhausted or unable to move, are trampled to death by their cage mates. Hundreds of companies around the world are ditching cages. Global commitments to go cage-free are being made by some of the largest companies in the world, including Nestle, Unilever, Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, Sodexo, Compass Group, Lidl, and Aldi. Even low-end fast food companies and US prisons are moving away from this horrible practice.  Din Tai Fung has recognized that cages are inhumane and outdated. Its restaurant in the United Kingdom already exclusively sources cage-free eggs. Unfortunately, Din Tai Fung refuses to apply these same basic standards in other countries.  Din Tai Fung claims: “we are honest, fair, and accountable for our actions” and that “quality is the lifeblood of business”. It’s time that Din Tai Fung acknowledge that animals and its guests deserve higher food standards. It’s time that Din Tai Fung demonstrates it cares about its values by making a global cage-free commitment. Please sign this petition to tell Din Tai Fung that you won’t be visiting any of their restaurants until it stops supporting this egregious animal abuse. Din Tai Fung: Hentikan Penganiayaan Haiwan Din Tai Fung kerap menuntut bahawa ia prihatin akan kualiti. Akan tetapi, berkenaan isu kebajikan haiwan, rangkaian restoran Taiwan yang ikonik ini menghampakan pelanggan-pelanggannya dan reputasinya sendiri. Ayam penelur yang tidak terkira bilangannya menderita di dalam sangkar yang kejam di seluruh rangkaian pembekalan antarabangsa Din Tai Fung. Sangkar-sangkar ini begitu kecil dan sesak dengan ayam sehingga ayam-ayam tidak dapat melakukan apa-apa kegiatan yang semulajadi atau penting untuk mereka. Anggota badan mereka kerap terperangkap dalam celah-celah sangkar, dan ini menyebabkan tulang patah, kecacatan, dan keguguran bulu. Sesetengah ayam, disebabkan keletihan atau kerana tidak dapat bergerak, dipijak sehingga mati oleh ayam-ayam yang lain dalam keadaan yang sesak itu. Ratusan syarikat di seluruh dunia kini menghentikan penggunaan sangkar ayam. Komitment antarabangsa untuk telur bebas kurungan sedang dibuat oleh antara syarikat-syarikat yang terbesar di dunia, termasuklah Nestle, Unilever, Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, Sodexo, Compass Group, Lidl, dan Aldi. Malah, syarikat makanan ringan yang bertahap rendah dan penjara-penjara di Amerika Syarikat juga dalam proses menghentikan amalan yang kejam ini. Din Tai Fung telahpun memaklumi bahawa sangkar-sangkar ini kejam dan ketinggalan zaman. Restorannya di United Kingdom hanya menggunakan telur bebas kurungan. Malangnya, Din Tai Fung enggan melaksanakan piawaian asas ini di negara-negara lain. Din Tai Fung menuntut: “Kami jujur, adil, dan amanah dalam tindakan-tindakan kami” dan “kualiti adalah nyawa perniagaan kami.” Kini tibanya masa Din Tai Fung memaklumi bahawa haiwan-haiwan dan pelanggan-pelanggannya berhak mendapat tahap piawaian makanan yang lebih tinggi. Kini tibanya masa untuk Din Tai Fung menunjukkan bahawa ia prihatin akan nilai-nilainya dengan membuat komitmen antarabangsa untuk telur bebas kurungan. Sila tandatangani petisyen ini untuk memberitahu Din Tai Fung bahawa anda tidak akan mengunjungi restoran-restorannya sehingga ia berhenti menyokong penganiayaan haiwan.

    Subway Malaysia: Please stop using eggs from hens caged in cruel conditions!

    Subway Malaysia: Please stop using eggs from hens caged in cruel conditions!   Do you know that over 40 million hens in Malaysia are confined in tiny cages for their entire lives to produce eggs? These tiny cages, known as battery cages, are considered one of the cruellest forms of animal confinement and are bad for food safety. The fast food chain Subway has already committed to totally eliminate the use of battery-farmed eggs in its products, both in North America and in Latin America, but not in Malaysia. So it is time to ask Subway: why do Malaysians deserve less than the people of North America and Latin America?   These cages are so small that the hens cannot even walk or spread their wings completely. Because of these cages, hens suffer a higher risk of injury, lose their feathers, and develop painful bone conditions, including osteoporosis.[i] Keeping birds in these conditions is immensely cruel. Science has proven that chickens are sentient beings, able to feel pain, stress, and fear. Surely they deserve more compassion. If we eat their eggs, we owe them a better life.   Battery cages are bad for food safety as well. The largest study ever conducted by agricultural and scientific institutions shows that battery farms are 25 times more likely to be contaminated with salmonella, compared to cage-free farms.[ii] Malaysians should not accept being served battery-farmed eggs that are more likely to be contaminated by salmonella, a deadly bacteria that has caused deaths, including of children!   Many other multinational companies - such as Nestlé, Unilever, Kraft Heinz, and Mondelez International - have already committed to only use eggs of hens that are raised without cages in their products in Asia, including in Malaysia. There is no excuse for Subway not to join this movement, for the sake of human well-being and animal welfare.   Please join us and ask Subway to make this world a better place for animals and for food safety by adopting a cage-free egg policy in Malaysia and all other countries in Asia. Kurungan yang kecil ini, yang dikenali sebagai kurungan bateri, digolongkan sebagai salah satu kaedah pengurungan haiwan yang paling kejam dan ianya juga tidak baik untuk keselamatan makanan kita. Kurungan-kurungan bateri ini begitu kecil sehingga ayam tidak dapat berjalan atau membuka sayap mereka. Disebabkan kurungan-kurungan ini, ayam menghadapi risiko kecederaan yang lebih tinggi, mengalami keguguran bulu, dan menghidap penyakit tulang yang perit, termasuklah osteoporosis. Mengurung haiwan dalam keadaan sebegini amatlah kejam. Sains telah membuktikan bahawa ayam adalah haiwan yang dapat berfikir dan berasa sakit, tertekan dan takut. Tidakkah mereka berhak dilayan dengan prihatin? Jika kita memakan telur mereka, kita patut meningkatkan kebajikan dan taraf hidup mereka. Kurungan bateri juga buruk untuk keselamatan makanan kita. Kajian yang paling besar yang dilaksanakan oleh institusi-institusi pertanian dan saintifik menunjukkan bahawa ladang ternakan ayam kurungan bateri  adalah 25 kali ganda lebih tinggi berkemungkinan dicemar oleh salmonella berbanding dengan ladang ternakan tanpa kurungan. Rakyat Malaysia tidak patut dihidangkan telur kurungan bateri yang lebih berkemungkinan dicemar oleh salmonella, bakteria merbahaya yang mampu menyebabkan kematian, termasuklah kematian kanak-kanak.   Banyak syarikat antarabangsa yang lain – termasuklah Nestlé, Unilever, Kraft Heinz, dan Mondelez International – telahpun merakamkan komitmen mereka untuk hanya menggunakan telur ayam tanpa kurungan untuk produk-produk mereka di Asia, termasuklah di Malaysia. Oleh itu, Subway tiada alasan untuk tidak menyertai gerakan ini, demi kesejahteraan manusia dan kebajikan haiwan. Sertailah kami untuk menyeru Subway agar menjadikan dunia kita lebih baik demi haiwan dan keselamatan makanan dengan mengamalkan dasar telur tanpa kurungan di Malaysia dan negara-negara lain di Asia!
