Seniors ANd Disabled Bus Access Group (SANDBAG)
To lobby the WA state government to make access to the Transperth bus network easier for mobility disabled people in line with international standards ... and in that vein, to restore bus route 15 for the benefit of the whole & local community - especially seniors and mobility disabled people - not just the privileged people who can walk easily more than 400 metres!

PLEASE restore Bus Route 15 for disabled, seniors & locals, Minister Saffioti & PTA - ASAP
Please help us ... We are a group of Disabled and Elderly Perth pensioners locked in a fight to save a bus route many of us have used for decades. We are asking the Public Transport Authority (PTA) to change the route back to its original configuration because the new route restricts the mobility of disabled people and the elderly and means that some have to walk almost a KILOMETRE to get to public transport or do without! And much of it is hilly terrain. Before this change to an 80-year-old bus route in growing, densely populated areas adjacent to Perth city, everyone in Mt Hawthorn and Glendalough was no more than 400m away from public transport. We believe that the PTA did not consult our local community properly and fully, with most people unaware of the change and the consultation. These people are angry this happened, even those who are neither elderly nor disabled. The PTA has since been defending their unreasonable actions to the hilt, wasting tax-payers money to justify and entrench the bus route 15 change, which duplicates services that already connected the train station before this unnecessary change. We have evidence that the PTA's change to local route 15 is a gross misuse of taxpayers money! [And the private bus companies get a government guaranteed profit for each kilometre a bus runs on its route - even if it's empty! (One company is owned by a retired London professor who has companies in England, Singapore and Australia!)] It benefits a handful of people - mainly a few school kids that live in one electorate who already had many transport options, and could easily walk a little further, using existing connecting buses. The PTA could have simply relocated the former Leeder St terminus to the top of Cayley St near Glendalough train station, which would have been less costly and would have produced the greatest benefit to ALL transport patrons. We suggested this option well before the change but the PTA persisted! Now Harborne Street residents have double the services available while local mobility disabled people - many elderly - must now brave main roads and walk further to get anywhere. We formed the Seniors ANd Disabled Bus Action (now Access) Group over a year ago in response. Our survey of 344 local residents showed that only 11% supported the change and over 55% opposed it. We presented a 180 signature petition to parliament, but the government sided with the PTA. We managed to get Transperth (PTA) to put in a "temporary fix", extremely limited bus route 14, which was a help, but they took it away in August 2016, as it seemed to be designed to fail (as most other bus trials in the past have failed, we've been informed). We require YOUR Help please to get the message across to politicians and "public servants" ("Yes, Minister"?) https://youtu.be/FOIs9wCuf-0 https://youtu.be/dIto5mwDLxo https://youtu.be/on2I1U-F3BY https://youtu.be/U01oual9ysQ One of our group, Eugenia Krysiak, a disabled 91-year-old lady who is one of a number of us that now have to use taxis to get around, has already taken on the PTA with a human rights complaint. We also tried to get an injunction to stop the PTA taking route 14 from us. Sadly, we failed and have been hit with massive legal costs from government lawyers who don't care and have deep taxpayer funded pockets (they get paid regardless). Gold medal-winning Paralympian, Sandra Yaxley (with Eugenia Krysiak, both part of SANDBAG), is featured in a Channel 9 story about the issue.http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/sandra-yaxley-a-paralympic-trailblazer/story-fnhocxo3-1226665147027 This is also affecting many other mobility disabled and senior people (some of whom no longer get out), and many other route 15 users, and has cut one part of the local community off from the other. But the government doesn't seem to care (so far - election coming, though) PLEASE HELP OUR COMMUNITY TO GET OUR BUS BACK!!
