Save Our Waves Maldives

Sign the petition to protect Maldives surf breaks from rampant coastal development! (Translation in Dhivehi below) Save The Waves Coalition at the direction of and in partnership with local surfers, international partners, and the independent organization Save Our Waves Maldives, is officially launching a campaign to call for the protection of surf breaks across the islands of the Maldives.   Our local partners estimate there are at least 20 world class waves that are immediately threatened by infrastructure projects or have already been damaged or lost due to development.   Chickens, one of the best and most accessible waves in the Maldives, has been significantly altered due to the construction of a seawall on the island. In addition, many other waves are faced with similar infrastructure projects; these will damage the waves, reef ecosystems, and surf communities that depend on these places.  Save The Waves is calling on government agencies and development interests to protect the incredible waves the country possesses by ensuring no development project impacts or destroys surf ecosystems.  Learn more at www.savethewaves.org/maldives Sign the petition to make your voice heard to Protect Maldives waves! ¡Salvemos Punta Conejo!

Save The Waves is officially launching a campaign to protect Punta Conejo, a renowned surf break along the coastline of Southern Oaxaca, threatened by the construction of a new industrial port project.  TAKE ACTION NOW! SIGN THE PETITION. The Issue: The Mexican Federal Government announced the “Development Plan for the Isthmus of Tehuantepec”, which includes the development of a new industrial port in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. ------------------------------------------------ SAVE PUNTA CONEJO IN SALINA CRUZ, OAXACA! In December 2018 the Federal Government announced a development plan for the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which considers the construction of a breakwater and a new industrial port in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca Mexico. This project as planned could potentially destroy the iconic wave and surrounding habitat of Punta Conejo. Save the Waves Coalition and our partners recognize the importance of ports for commerce in Mexico, but are imploring the Federal Government not to authorize the construction of a port at this location, which would cause irreversible damage to the wave and ecosystem.  We ask that the government explore alternatives that would not result in the destruction of this ecosystem and the economies that depend on it. The proposed project will impact various natural areas including Playa Brazil, Playa Azul, Salinas del Marques Lagoon, and the surfing area known as Punta Conejo. Although the President of Mexico has explained on several occasions that every project during his tenure would respect the history, culture and traditions of local communities and the environment, this project would destroy the wetlands and surrounding habitats with a direct impact to wildlife, the wave, and the local economy.  Salinas del Marques, Playa Azul, and Playa Brazil are habitat for vulnerable species including the olive ridley and leatherback sea turtles and the local community depends on this ecosystem for fishing and salt production. With the construction of a new port in this area, the wetland would be destroyed. Punta Conejo is an internationally recognized wave of excellent quality.  It is the driver of tourism in the area with surfers coming from around the world to surf the point break.  The development of a new port would have a direct impact on the quality of this public resource. This petition asks the Federal Government to not approve the construction of a new industrial port in the area of Punta Conejo and explore alternatives that do not destroy the ecosystems and economies that depend on a healthy Punta Conejo.

Protect the first Mexican surf spot and one of the last intact watersheds in Baja California. Ask Governor Jaime Bonilla Valdez to protect Arroyo San Miguel and the classic wave. At the heart of Bahia de Todos Santos World Surfing Reserve in northern Baja, the San Miguel watershed is a critical riparian ecosystem that contributes necessary sand and cobblestones to form the classic wave at San Miguel. This petition asks the Governor of Baja California, Jaime Bonilla Valdez, to declare this area as Baja California's first State Park which will guarantee long-term lasting protection. Approval of the proposed 67 hectare Arroyo San Miguel State Park will protect 6 kilometers of the watershed that drain towards the river mouth at San Miguel beach.  The Arroyo San Miguel State Park will: 1) Protect the watershed and iconic wave at San Miguel. 2) Provide essential public open space for recreational activities, sports and a much needed community area. 3) Increase the percentage of green area per inhabitant and prevent environmental impacts and pollution by preserving the riparian environment and natural landscape of the watershed. 4) Protect San Miguel Creek and important aquifers that provide water for local residents. SIGN THIS PETITION TO EXPRESS TO THE GOVERNOR OF BAJA CALIFORNIA, JAIME BONILLA VALDEZ, YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE CREATION OF THE SAN MIGUEL STATE PARK.
