Stop the Sale of Puppies in Pet Stores - Washington State
Those of us in the Animal Rescue Community of Washington State; those of us who have welcomed the love of a rescue dog into their home; those of us who don't see 'puppies as products' but as living creatures that deserve a standard of care - request that the Washington State Legislature follows the lead of other enlightened states and countries by banning the sale of puppies and kittens in pet stores. The Human Society estimates 2 million puppies originating from commercial breeding facilities called puppy mills, are sold in pet stores each year. The ASPCA estimates 1.5 million companion animals are euthanized each year in the shelter system. That 1.5 million number includes puppies, highly adoptable dogs and purebred dogs. Our Washington State shelter and rescue systems are amazing, the service they provide to our communities is a gift to both the pets and their new owners. Washington State was ranked #6 for states with the highest pet ownership - 62%+ have a pet in their home. Recently a pet store called Puppyland opened in Puyallup, Washington. The outcry in the rescue and pet loving community has been deafening. We now call to our State and Local representatives to do what is right, and draft legislation banning the 'sale' of puppies and kittens in pet stores, to ban the import of dogs from puppy mills, or any USDA breeding facility, to enact legislation like so many states and counties that have similar bans. Thank You.
