Disabled Havertown Students Deserve Equity in Education!
To the over 75,000 people living in The Haverford School District! Did you think there was equity for our K-12 Havertown Students with mental and/or physical disabilities? Our family did... until the appropriate learning environment for our child was outside of the district! When we asked for support for our disabled child to utilize virtual learning similar to "Haverford OnLine" their blended online learning program - we were told NO! This violates Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act! The School District of Haverford Township operates this online learning program where students at "all levels" are able to access the general education curriculum. Well, all of our mental and/or physical disabled students who's FAPE is outside of the district's brick and mortar's... we are being left out of blended learning! It is discriminatory and ethically objectionable ANY student with a mental and/or physical disability is not permitted to access the requisite special education services needed to demonstrate adequate yearly progress in a virtual format; while general education and gifted peers are able to access a vast assortment of courses online. Providing non-disabled students with the opportunity to access the general education curriculum via online learning while simultaneously barring students with disabilities to access special education supports and services virtually is discriminatory and violates Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act. John Maxwell says it best... "The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjust the sails."Please, join us as we continue to urge HSD to "adjust the sails" for our mental and/or physical disability K-12 students!
