As a collective, we’re motivated by the power of gathering and human connection. However, in light of the current crisis, our businesses have been shuttered for the sake of public health. As a group of business owners that are underrepresented and misunderstood by lawmakers, we’ve formed a coalition to put together ROAR (Relief Opportunity for All Restaurants), a powerful and thoughtful list of suggestions and recommendations that will save our industry in the face of this most devastating of crises. Hear our #ROAR. We are indeed #toosmalltofail.

ROAR (Relief Opportunities for All Restaurants) SLA Reform Letter to Governor Cuomo

Dear Governor Cuomo The COVID-19 crisis has left many of New York’s businesses and industries vulnerable and struggling to reinvent themselves to survive in New York, after the COVID-19 pandemic. The restaurant industry in New York will have a particularly difficult and unique challenge once the state re-opens and as an employer of over 1 million New Yorkers it is important that the industry come back stronger than ever. We are Relief Opportunities for All Restaurants (ROAR), a coalition of restaurants in New York dedicated to rebuilding the restaurant industry. The current New York State on Pause order has changed the operations and regulations of the New York State Liquor Authority. In order to get the restaurant industry back on track, it is necessary to maintain the current State Liquor Authority (SLA) payment extensions and continue to allow for on premise sales. The State must continue to allow the SLA to permit businesses to open with a Temporary License in New York City while their applications are going through the lengthy backlog at the SLA, as they do for applicants elsewhere in the state. Also, the State should extend the current lift on SLA restrictions, permitting restaurants to sell alcohol to customers for pickup or delivery. This will provide a much needed, alternative revenue stream during the extensive recovery period. With the strains the restaurant industry is currently facing, this high margin revenue stream is critical to help us weather this period, particularly as many restaurants will be left with only to go and take out operations in order to comply with social distancing requirements.  Restaurants are central to New York. They are vital to our neighborhoods, to tourism, and to the cultural fabric of our cities and towns. More importantly, restaurants employ more people than any other industry in New York, almost 1 million strong. As the largest private employer in New York, the restaurant industry here is being hit harder than any other industry in any state. Continuing these changes will give our industry the opportunity to rebuild while helping the State rebuild its economy during this difficult time. The restaurant industry needs to be fundamentally rethought to be able to adapt to the new realities of the post-pandemic world we are all preparing for. This health crisis has laid bare many of the structural flaws in the industry and the ways in which it is regulated. We are asking the State to support New York’s restaurants and restaurant workers by extending what has been an essential lifeline during this crisis and giving us the flexibility we need to reopen stronger than ever.   - ROAR
