Support watershed governance in northwest BC's international river systems

The mostly unprotected transboundary watersheds of northwest BC and southeast Alaska, which include the Alsek-Tatshenshini, Chilkat, Taku, Whiting, Iskut-Stikine, and Unuk, define the essence of wilderness and remain one of North America's best conservation opportunities. The transboundary region is vast, alive, and abundant. Communities on both sides of the border depend on its natural bounty. The transboundary rivers support robust wildlife populations including grizzly and black bears, mountain goats, sheep, wolves, caribou, and all five wild Pacific salmon species. In a time of accelerating climate change the significance of these watersheds as complete, diverse, and resilient reservoirs of biodiversity cannot be overlooked.  There is an urgent need for an international conversation - upstream connecting downstream - about the future of this region. Presently there is no mechanism in place to facilitate dialogue, consider cumulative impacts, establish enforceable standards, or ensure coordinated stewardship toward safeguarding transboundary watershed values. Mining and related industrial development on a potentially massive scale are proposed and occurring at various stages in the headwaters of the Taku, Iskut-Stikine, and Unuk, putting this globally significant region at risk. Please sign this petition urging the Premier of BC to support a new ecosystem based, international framework for the governance of these spectacular river systems along the wild border of BC and Alaska.
