Make Glen Innes a Refugee Welcome Zone
The plight of the Syrian refugees has been overshadowed by recent terrorist raids around the world. But now more than ever, these asylum seekers need our help. The fear surrounding the threats to global security has meant refugees are at an even greater risk from borders being closed and the ill-informed spreading hate and mistrust about 'outsiders'. This us and them mentality is doing more harm and is actually feeding into the effectiveness of the ISIL fear campaign. The Refugees Welcome Glen Innes Support Group has been set up and is working towards assisting Syrian refugees (3-5 families as part of the Federal Government's intake of 12,000 refugees) to settle in Glen Innes. The group has broad community support however, the success of this incentive will be vastly improved with Council support. We need our government to show strong, informed and compassionate leadership and not be swayed by fear and the opinions of the mis-informed. Glen Innes Severn Council can make a significant impact on the lives of a few innocent families fleeing from their homes in Syria and Iraq and benefit our community by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. We urge our council to become a Refugee Welcome Zone, so that we can foster a culture of mutual respect for human rights and social cohesion. There are no financial or statutory commitments attached to the signing of this declaration, it is simply to make a statement that our community is willing to embrace different cultures and acknowledge the contribution that refugees have made in the making of Australia. All Glen Innes residents are invited to sign this petition before 16 December 2015 to ask Council to become a Refugee Welcome Zone to show that our community is supportive.
