The Queens Anti-Gentrification Project is an all-volunteer effort to prevent gentrification and displacement in Woodside, Jackson Heights, Sunnyside, and all of Queens. We’re fighting to keep our neighborhoods affordable by organizing around issues of unaffordable real estate development, Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), zoning and other aspects of gentrification. We reject public-private partnerships such as the Jackson Heights-Corona and Woodside BIDs because they always benefit the developer over the neighborhood. We oppose all rezonings and projects that aim to attract real estate developers by increasing housing density and land value. We believe in tenants’ rights, and the right of neighborhoods to maintain continuity from one generation to the next. Fight with us!

Sunnyside Yard Must Go Solar

The last decade has seen record high temperatures and extreme weather events such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires.  Climate change is here and action must be taken to reverse it. At the same time, rampant luxury real estate development has erased much of New York City's working class over the years.  Sunnyside Yard is being eyed for one of the biggest development projects in the city's history.  Mayor Bill de Blasio is on record calling for the construction of over ten thousand luxury real estate units, in addition to several other proposals and ideas coming from all around.  None of them serve the local community, and none of them come from us. It is in this context that we, the residents of Sunnyside and western Queens, are calling for community control of our public land - Sunnyside Yard.  Specifically, we are calling for the construction of a solar farm that will help create sustainable energy to fight climate change and push our city into the future.  We do not need more luxury real estate construction, pushing rents higher and higher.  What we need is to leave a habitable Earth for our children and our grandchildren. **This petition was written in collaboration with long term local resident Jeff Vogel who also penned this letter in the Queens Chronicle: http://www.qchron.com/opinion/letters_to_the_editor/a-sunnyside-solar-farm/article_43f7c799-b813-5872-b1de-09d2b6b9c205.html
