Improve Food Service in Our Schools
Have you ever wanted to improve the quality of food and food options being offered your children in their school cafeteria? You are not alone! While we may feel powerless alone, if we stand together we might be able to make small changes little by little which will impact the health of our children substantially. This is a tough fight made even tougher by all the complicated rules set forth by the USDA. While we all know that fruit juice is not a healthful alternative to eating its real, whole fruit counterpart, there are guidelines set forth by the USDA that allow our food service provider to serve this to our children in addition to or in place of a whole fruit option (in other words, fruit juice is counted as a fruit). This is just one example of how very complex this issue is and why it is absolutely essential that we take a stand to bring in a professional food reformist who is familiar with all the USDA guidelines, to be our childrens' food advocate. Sign this petition to bring food reformist, Julia Van Loon to the Port Washington UFSD Aramark (our district's food service provider) will finish their contract at the end of this school year. Now is the time to bring in a food reformist to develop a bid for the next food service provider. A food reformist, such as Julia van Loon will make sure our kids are getting the most healthful options within the confines of the USDA's National School Lunch Program. Julia is famous for her work with the North Shore SD (google it and you will see how wonderful she is) and is familiar with our district as she was our food reformist 4 years ago when the contract was last filled. We are starting this petition to show the district how important it is that the district bring a food reformist in to shape the bid with more healthful options. For the sake and health of our children please sign this petition.
